FINA Judges Certification Course – Beijing CHN

Beijing Dv CC

2 of our local diving judges, LIM Jia Yan and LOK Xin Min were selected to attend the FINA Judges Certification Course in Beijing from the 13 to 15th of March 2014. Below is a report by Jia Yan on her experience:

“On the first day, our lecturers for the course Frans VAN DE KONIJNENBURG and Klaus DI BIASI from the FINA Technical Diving Committee introduced us to the course and also briefed us of the objectives. We went through the different diving elements of dives which refreshed our memory and further enhanced our understanding of diving. We also revised the diving rules and discussed a few new rules which were newly added last year. Following that we started watching diving videos and did video judging as a class. We also had a chance to discuss about a few dives and how the scores should be fairly given. After lunch, we had a presentation about the role and duties of a referee followed by a presentation on synchronised diving. We ended the first day of the course with more diving videos and further discussions of the dives and some of the rules.

After much preparation on the first night back in the hotel, we were back on the second day and started off in the morning with practical shadow judging at FINA Diving World Series competition in Beijing Water Cube. The class was divided into 2 groups (each group judging a different event), each group was given a set of paper printed with the diver names and dive numbers and a blank for us to score the dive. We were seated in the stands positioned just behind the judges of the competition. After 2 events, we submitted our score sheets and got ready for the theory test. Upon completing our theory test, we did with a few more rounds of practical judging as the competition went on. At the end of the day, we had a debrief session and discussed about a few dives which we saw during the competition and talked about how we scored them and how we should score them.

The last day of the course was practical more shadow judging at the FINA World Series competition. While watching the professional divers dive and giving scores while sitting at the stands, we also learnt from a few of our classmates as they provided us with valuable advice from their coaching or judging experiences. At the end of the day, our results were collated by our lecturers and calculated in their system. The results were announced by our lecturers at the end of the day. The whole class passed both the theory and practical test.

Xinmin and I were very relieved and also thankful that we were given this opportunity by SSA. It was a fruitful trip and we have learned from so much from the lecturers, our classmates, the divers and also from each other. We are even more excited for what experiences awaits us as we start our new journey as FINA certified judges.”
